Proper alignment of wireless carrier antenna networks is considered one of the last frontiers in the ongoing quest to improve wireless carrier network performance and decrease churn and revenue loss as a result. Ask any RF Engineer from any carrier today if they know how accurately aligned their antenna network is, and what does it mean to them, and their answer will be a positive one, quickly followed by an “according to our data”. The issue with this lies on the source of the data in question. It is typically driven by reports provided by contractors that use rudimentary processes to determining the network alignment health. Unfortunately, when asked if they can pull information on the condition of their network alignment in real time, the answer will be “no”.

 

The fact is that today’s wireless carrier networks rely for the most part in antiquated basic processes such as compasses, to determining azimuth of any antenna. Some other important factors determining the quality of any network alignment are tilt and roll. These two suffer from poor monitoring and quality control processes, and the lack of proper technology to inform of any issues affecting the network.
